What is the Safe and Sound Protocol?

The Safe and Sound Protocol is an evidence-based listening intervention designed to reduce stress and auditory sensitivity while enhancing social engagement and resilience.

Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges based on Polyvagal Theory, SSP uses specially filtered music to help calm the nervous system and improve emotional regulation.

SSP works by using prosodic vocal music that has been processed to emphasise specific sound frequencies. This helps to train the neural pathways involved in:

  • Listening and processing sound
  • Feeling safe and calm
  • Connecting with others
  • Regulating emotions and responses

The protocol is delivered through headphones over a series of sessions and can be used with people of all ages—from children to adults.

Who Can Benefit from SSP?

SSP can support individuals experiencing:

Anxiety and trauma-related challenges
Auditory sensitivities and sound processing difficulties
Difficulty with emotional regulation
Social communication challenges
Attention and focus difficulties
Behavioural challenges related to nervous system dysregulation
Stress response difficulties
Sleep challenges

SSP is suitable for:

  • Children, adolescents, and adults
  • Neurodivergent individuals (including autistic people)
  • People with complex support needs
  • Those with trauma histories
  • Anyone seeking nervous system regulation support

How SSP Works

The program involves listening to specially processed music through headphones over a series of sessions. The filtered music helps activate the neural pathways involved in four key areas:

Why We're Offering SSP

At Clarity Pathways, we've seen firsthand how nervous system regulation is foundational to behaviour support, emotional wellbeing, and overall quality of life.

When the nervous system is in a state of chronic stress or dysregulation, it impacts everything—from how we process sensory information to how we connect with others, manage emotions, and respond to challenges.

Krystina is a certified SSP practitioner and is passionate about integrating this powerful, evidence-based tool into our holistic approach to support. SSP complements our behaviour support and dietetics services beautifully—because when the nervous system feels safe, meaningful change becomes possible.
